In the last decade, various ideas and designs have been proposed for concrete removal, but only a few have been implemented. One of the most widely used solutions is the use of multiple-use polypropylene plastic molds known as waffle formworks. Waffle in English means a pancake with a window design, which is why it is used for lattice and window-like slabs.
Here are some of the advantages of the Waffle formwork over the U-boot and Cobiax formworks:
To save money on making U-boot or Cobiax molds often use low quality materials that are sensitive to sunlight. While running during the day, they may be exposed to sunlight for several days and can be damaged during transportation and installation of the bars. Damage and fractures of the molds may cause the concrete to enter the molds and increase the dead load of the roof unlike the calculations. In the implementation of hollow slabs, such as the U-boot and Cobiax, some of the middle slab concrete is removed, but tensile concrete is not removed. Applying the Waffle mold removes part of the tensile concrete in addition to the middle concrete. For this reason, the waffle roof requires about 20% less concrete than the hollow roof. In other words, 200 kg less concrete is used per square meter, which is economically and technically very important. Waffle molds impose a lower cost per square meter of roof because they can be used multiple times than in-situ molds.
